About me

Hello Welcome to my Scottish food Blog

I am a married, 40 something year old, Scottish expat, living in Texas.

Also, I am the mum of Sir Scoffs-A-Lot (a name bestowed upon my son by his Auntie Sammy as he is always snacking), he is my gorgeous son, the love of my life.

I love cooking, nature, animals, painting, decorating, drawing... and I have a  stripe obsession.....I Do, just ask Mr Tartan Tastes.

Although I was born and raised in Scotland I have only set foot back in Scotland a handful of times in the last 10 years, I miss a decent fish supper, square sausage on a roll with brown sauce and many other simple Scottish delights.

So I decided to round up all my dog eared favourite recipes and share them with y'all...did you see what I just did there? That’s my Texan drawl.....

So if you are like me and need a wee bit of home from home. Enjoy !

Or if you are Scottish at heart. Dig In !

Thanks for taking the time to peek.

Bye the noo

Angela

  2. Hi, Angela: I've been searching for a recipe for the kind of soup my Mum used to make back home in Scotland. It was a golden color and I think she used either a ham bone or beef shank as well as potatoes and other vegs., and perhaps lentils or barley. We would eat any beef that was left on the bone with the soup. A friend here in Toronto served us a soup that was very like it but she doesn't like to share and told me there was no such thing as a "recipe" for soup. Do you have a recipe for Scottish soup or Scotch broth in your collection?

    2. I have a recipe for a soup that we call Gam soup...my grandmother made it and then my mom and then me :) It calls for carrot, turnip, leeks and uses a ham hock for the broth. red lentils give it that orange gold colour... my mother sometimes put potatoes in as well to add extra thickness...it's delicious!!!!Happy to share if you want to email me...I might even have a picture somewhere so you could confirm that it at least looks the same. myfergus@hotmail.com Deborah :)

  3. Hi Angela,
I'm an author working on a project and believe you might be able to point me the right direction for some information I'm looking for.

May I send you an email and tell you what I'm doing?

  4. Hi! Stopping by from Cheerios And Lattes. We are practically neighbors! ;-) I live in Katy and am a Texas gal married to an expat. Northern Irish by way of Aberdeen and Edinburgh for 10 years. We went over together for a wedding once and I would love to return! Had a lovely time in the Grass Market, on Princes Street and a drive out to Stirling and Bannockburn. Oh and I had haggis at the wedding and blood pudding for breakfast. Haha! So glad to have found you!

  5. Do you have a potato scones recipe? We live in Toronto and yes we have a good bakery where we purchase them weekly but we will be moving to a small town where we won't be able to buy them and we will like to bake them at home.
    Thank you

    1. Hi, I use equal parts (1 cup each) mashed potatoes and flour along with an egg. Roll out into circles and cut into quarters to make triangles. This is how my Nana and Mum made tattie scones and this recipe is as good as any you'll find in Baird's. Hope you enjoy them. :)

  7. Came across your blog while doing research for an upcoming trip (and potential move) -- I needed to find out what Stovies Night would be! I'm a transplanted Texan preparing for a potential move to the Highlands, so your recipes are very helpful. Thanks so much for sharing!

    1. Hi Suzanne, I have to say you are going to love your trip and possible move. I have a recipe on here for Stovies if you have not had the chance to taste this great Scottish dish you should give it a try.

I would probably say Stovies night would simply be a gathering of friends where Stovies would be served and along with some other great comforting Scottish foods, my link for the stovie recipe is http://www.tartantastesintx.com/2012/12/scottish-recipes-stovies.html

  8. This blog is perfect. I've been looking for something like this for a good while now.

I'm from Forfar, Angus, and found myself attending Radford University in Radford, Virginia, in 2011, on a four year football scholarship. This Christmas, I've decided to trade going home for staying with my girlfriend (who is from Tennessee) and a trip to the Bahamas. I'm not sure how I'm going to cope with the winter sunshine!

Long story short, I've been looking to make some of the classic Scottish daintys that I've been longing for and your blog is provided the perfect opportunity to do that!

I'll be checking back regularly and keeping up with your posts. Keep up the good work!

  9. Angela, someone posted a link to your blog on USAF at RAF Kirknewton, a HUB of Spokt.com - a meeting place for personnel (and family) who served at that facility in Scotland, near Edinburgh. I've just arrived on your blog, but expect my Scottish wife to be delighted when I share it with her!

    1. Hi Denise, Nice to hear from you. Thanks for the question. I would throw it out and make a new batch, chances are it's probably not good anymore, I imagine it might have lost some of its flavour as it has more than likely not been sealed this whole time.

  12. So nice to have found this blog! My parents were missionaries and my brother and I lived in Scotland (Dundee actually) until May 1990. I really miss those days, and we haven't been back since about '95. We get together every week and often make Scottish recipes. I was actually searching for a Tablet recipe to surprise my brother with tonight for our Christmas get together, and came across your site. We make Scotch Eggs, Stovies and other things. This site is going to be great!!!! So funny to me that I also live in TX and found this page where you said you had lived in Dundee. I went to Powrie Primary, which is gone now :( Anyway, I will be following this site from now on. Thanks for all the good recipes!

  14. I grew up in New Jersey, but my parents were both born in Scotland. My mother sometimes made tattie scones but I hadn't had them in years...until I had them in a hotel in Norway this year! I'll be following your site and will definitely make the microwave tablet. Something else I make regularly : millionaires bars.
